The aim of this paper is to present the gender pay gap at the different points of the wage distribution in Mongolia and analyze the underlying causes. There are two main reasons for this investigation. Firstly, for Mongolia, there are a limited amount of empirical works on the gender pay gap. Most of these studies examine the gap based on the average monthly wage of women and men. However, it should be noted that the gender pay gap tends not to be constant across the wage distribution. Secondly, by this paper, I am investigating the reverse gender pay gap at the median in Mongolia. The result that earning of women is more than men at the 25th percentile and the median is unusual, and not seen in most other countries (OECD, 2019). One of the prime causes might be the inequality in educational pursuits, lack of empowerment of women with higher education, and lack of empowerment of men with lower-education. After controlling for the specifications, the gap at the median tends to favor men. However, it will not justify the fact that occupational segregation and educational attainment among men and women are unequal.
